Students at the chalk art constest

Each year, South Ogden Junior High transforms into a vibrant gallery space, showcasing the creativity, talent, and entrepreneurial spirit of its students. The school’s annual art show has become a cornerstone community event—one that not only highlights student achievement but also brings families, neighbors, and local artists together in celebration.

What makes this event especially remarkable is its scale and inclusivity. Nearly two-thirds of the student body participates, filling the halls with an impressive variety of artwork. From detailed drawings and expressive paintings to intricate ceramics, handcrafted jewelry, stained glass, and pieces from the school’s newer paper crafts program, the show reflects the breadth and strength of the school’s art curriculum.

A unique feature of the event is that students don’t just display their work—they also have the opportunity to sell it. Young artists set their own prices, gaining firsthand experience in valuing their creativity and engaging with buyers. Proceeds from sales both support the art program and go directly to the students, reinforcing the real-world impact of their work.

The evening also includes a juried component, with a professional artist invited to evaluate submissions and present awards across multiple categories. These recognitions celebrate excellence within each discipline and give students a meaningful sense of accomplishment.

Beyond the gallery walls, the event expands into a full-campus celebration. A popular highlight is the chalk art competition, where students transform sidewalk squares into colorful, temporary masterpieces. These pieces are judged as part of the event, adding an interactive and dynamic element to the show.

As the evening unfolds, the arts continue to shine through live performances by the school’s band and choir, providing a musical backdrop that enhances the festive atmosphere. Attendees can also enjoy food from local favorite Mi Puebla, whose presence adds to the welcoming, community-centered feel of the night.

The South Ogden Junior High art show is more than an exhibition—it’s a celebration of student voice, creativity, and connection. It offers young artists a platform to shine while strengthening the bond between the school and the broader South Ogden community. Year after year, it stands as a testament to what can happen when creativity is nurtured and shared.
